About Locals

What is locals?
CBLocals.com is a website about underground music and skateboarding on cape breton island. It was started in february 1997, and has expanded considerably since then. it has enjoyed over several million hits, 2000 news posts, and over 20,000 guestbook posts since it went online.. Now most of the website contains dynamic content which is database driven. there are several dozen site administrators who post on local shows, skateboarding, and things of general interest to the local scene. the site originated in sydney, but we try to cover stuff in glace bay, new waterford, and the northside as well. we try not to discriminate against any types of local music. the site has a convenient backend for administrators so they can update the news, events, links, and bandlist without having to know any html...

what is locals.ca?
locals.ca is a small for-profit company run by harry and mike. it exists to provide former chatsubo clients and small businesses with web hosting. this business also gives 100% free webspace to the locals sites, as well as some other non-profit organizations.

cblocals was originally hosted by a small web company called chatsubo. chatsubo got bought by another company called knowledgehouse, who also gave us free hosting. knowledgehouse went out of business in september 2001, so harry and mike started locals.ca, and moved the locals sites onto it. locals.ca has its own set of servers, and leases a high speed business internet connection from mtt. although they share the same name, the locals homepage and locals.ca are otherwise formally unrelated to eachother.

How is this site run?
user feedback is critical.. this site has expanded with the scene over several years; therefore it is the scene's overall attitidue that will ultimitally dictate how locals progresses.. the site is user-oriented, not admin-oriented. if you don't see enough coverage of something, fire us off an email and help out.

the mailing list
we used to have a mailing list (it was locals@chatsubo.com), but it's no longer online.

irc
most of the admins hang out on irc. we go on dalnet (irc.dal.net and related servers), in a channel called #cblocals (and #cb_bands), which usually has up to fifty people in it nightly. skaters, check out #room42. another very large irc channel that a lot of capers go to is #teenpoolparty, also on dalnet. #teenpoolparty is irc's guestbook of shame, and actually got its roots as the channel everyone on locals hung out on (which was all 15-20 of us back in '97).

Problems with this site?
getting in touch with the people that run CBLocals.com gives you a voice. try mailing any of the admins, going to the #cblocals irc channel on dalnet, or posting to our guestbook.

no advertisements?
locals is a non profit site (or money-losing sole proprietorship or some shit). domain name fees, site hosting, computer gear, and more are all donated. all of software development, html, and database work is done in house on volunteer spare time. we don't want to bog you down with advertisements. we swallow the cost for this because we like locals; why should it cost you to use it?

prejudice and discrimination (hopefully lack of)
we don't want to exlude anyone. everyone is welcome to this site, and we definitely welcome contributions and help. if we think you would make a fine admin, we'll email you. this site is for everybody, and the more people that get involved with this, the better it will be for everybody. i'm not going to let locals become a little trendy website for the local elite (the two-way feedback system that powers the site won't let this happen either. ever notice the emphasis that locals puts on news from many administrators and the guestbook?).

open source
we run apache/mysql/php on freebsd. if you want a copy of the codebase, you can probably run your own locals-like site with a little tweaking. email harry for a copy of the code. contributing to locals
maybe you think you would make a good admin.. or maybe you were just bored and wanted to write a revue of a show or event.. maybe you saw an error in a post, or we got an event wrong.. maybe you have some poetry, artwork, or story for the written contributions.. feedback is important.. send it over to admin@cblocals.com or any of the admins..
