show review!
the punk/metal show at the upstairs on ferry st sat was a success with a decent turnout and three good bands. i was on hand to do sound so i took the whole thing in. moxham castle kicked things off with their second ever show. even though they stared first at 1030 there was still a decent amount of people in attendance. this band was not as abrasive as i was expecting, with a mixture of black metal and thrash (more of the latter). sean macintyre is an early thrash purist and this shows in the music. i did not catch the drummer's name but he held it together great. keep an eye out. sons of nebadon next and i enjoy them because i find them a 'different kind of punk band'. some stuff reminds me of early pennywise. there is one song i really like. later in the set they changed things up to acoustic rock with clean guitars. these songs didn't do it for me and the gtrs were out of tune by the end of it. up next the shithawks. now with steve floyd on guitar. what a funny and tight band. half originals and half covers (including the likes of minor threat and pantera). squeegee punk rock without the spitting. bonus!
i think based on the turnout people are into heavy stuff and not just the die hards. i noticed a cross section of people who often go to bunkers, and people that came really early and stayed till the end. people seem excited to see the next proctophobic set, which was mentioned by numerous people.
cape breton winners at music nova scotia
carmen townsend wins big with 4 awards, slowcoaster nabs 1. for more: cbc, cbpost, full winner list. carmen hilariously mentions how she's been influenced by metalheads back in the 90's.
week in review
i'm bringing this back. twitter is great but i can't make every tweet into a news post. so i will just recap the previous week's highlights and see how that works out. i am going to probably post this on sundays. and i am going to do one with last weeks news tomorrow night.
